Alumni Networks Newsletter

August 2011

The University of Oxford

Welcome to the third Alumni Networks Newsletter, keeping you informed of the latest news and developments from the University and its vibrant Alumni Network at home and abroad. After the great success of the Alumni Volunteers’ Leadership Conference, which gave us the opportunity to share best practice and celebrate and thank our dedicated alumni branch offices, one of the next major Alumni events on the horizon is the Oxford Alumni Weekend. In this edition we take a look back at the Conference as well as looking forward to the forthcoming Alumni Weekend, giving more information about the Branch Officers’ Lunch and Networking. In other news, I am also pleased to introduce myself as the Alumni Office’s Communications and Networks Assistant. I will be working with the Alumni Networks Manager Zoe Washford part-time to support the branches for the next few months and am delighted to have joined such a lively team, contributing to the invaluable work of the Alumni Office. I do hope that you enjoy reading this issue and welcome any feedback. Best wishes, Joby Mullens, Communications and Networks Assistant.

UNIVERSITY NEWS

Oxford ’s Access Agreement approved

Students in Oxford

Further to the news article in the previous E-newsletter about Oxford tuition fees, Oxford University ’s Access Agreement has now been approved by the Office for Fair Access (OFFA) and is available on the OFFA website and the University website.

Oxford will spend more of its additional fee income on access and financial support than any other university in England (50%) - nearly double the sector average.

The University is offering the lowest income students what is believed to be the most generous financial support package in the country, a combination of both fee waivers and bursaries worth £10,000 in the first year and £6,000 each year thereafter.

Alumni Volunteers' Leadership Conference

Alumni Volunteers' Leadership Conference 2011 branding

42 branch representatives from around the world attended the inaugural Alumni Volunteers’ Leadership Conference in July to share best practice and ideas. The weekend also offered us the opportunity to celebrate and thank our dedicated alumni branch officers.

Delegates travelled from as far afield as Fiji to attend the three day event, held at St Anne’s College, with half of those present from the UK .

The conference commenced on Friday with a champagne reception in the Bodleian quad hosted by the Vice-Chancellor Andrew Hamilton, followed by dinner in the Divinity School .  Saturday then offered a full day of activities including branches’ different approaches to volunteering.

David Langer (St Anne’s), founder of Group Spaces participated in a panel on communicating via print, the web and social networking and Berlin and London branch representatives shared best practices in event planning.

The invaluable role the Alumni branch network plays in keeping Alumni engaged with Oxford has been highlighted in a short film recorded at the Alumni Volunteers’ Leadership Conference in July.

Several Alumni group volunteers were interviewed during the three-day-event about why they got involved, the benefits and advantages of the network.
